Sonoma Valley

Overview

In 2016, Misfit was approached by the Sonoma Valley Visitors Bureau to address a persistent identity challenge. For years, Sonoma Valley had been positioned as the underdog to neighboring Napa Valley, often perceived as the quieter, less glamorous option in California Wine Country.

Yet the reality told a different story. The wine credentials were comparable, the landscapes equally stunning. And Sonoma offered what Napa increasingly did not: peace, authenticity, and a slower pace rooted in genuine hospitality.

Research revealed a key insight: while Napa stood for prestige and polish, many travelers were craving something more grounded. Sonoma’s differences weren’t their weakness, but their strength.

Instead of competing on Napa’s terms, Misfit repositioned Sonoma around authenticity, relaxed sophistication, and simpler pleasures. A new visual identity, messaging framework, and strategic platform gave wineries, hotels, restaurants, and local businesses a cohesive voice.

Sonoma no longer peered from Napa’s shadow. It stepped into its own light, claiming a distinct voice in California’s premier wine destination story and redefining what it means to truly escape.
